BMW X6 M50d.

The BMW X6 M50d benefits from the unique expertise of BMW M engineers, with a special, fine-tuned powertrain, suspension and design. The end result is an automobile that offers an exhilarating combination of sheer dynamism, comfort and everyday usability.

The BMW M Performance TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder diesel engine with triple turbocharger combines impressive performance with thrust that persists right up to the highest engine speeds. This power train from the EfficientDynamics engine family features CommonRail direct injection and a three-stage turbocharger with variable turbine geometry, which result in lightning-fast responsiveness and very high torque even at low engine speeds. At speeds between 2,000 and 3,000 rpm, the maximum torque of 740 Nm is available. The 3.0-litre engine produces its maximum output of 280 kW (381 hp) between 4,000 and 4,400 rpm. The BMW X6 M50d accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds. This impressive performance with a combined fuel consumption of 6.6 litres per 100 km and CO2 emissions of 174 g/km displays an outstanding relationship between dynamics and efficiency, and emphasises once again that BMW has legendary skill when it comes to engines.

With its M Performance specific settings, the adaptive M suspension ensures that the characteristic agility of BMW X models is geared to even more sportiness. The Dynamic Damper Control and air cushioning on the rear axle are tuned to deliver exceptionally sporty driving characteristics and ensure precise, finely-controllable handling properties.

The adaptive suspension package ‘Dynamic’ gives the BMW X6 M50d maximum agility, precision and lateral dynamics. M Performance specific Dynamic Performance Control and Dynamic Drive guarantee even more neutral steering and reduce body side tilt on bends.

The intelligent BMW xDrive 4-wheel drive system adapts to even the most challenging road surface conditions, always offering outstanding traction. With xDrive and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), the BMW X6 remains directionally stable and on track. Split-second response times allow xDrive to distribute drive power flexibly between the two axles for optimum grip. In this way, xDrive combines the advantages of all-wheel drive – traction, directional stability and safety – with classic BMW agility.


A clear message even in difficult situations: With xDrive Status, drivers always see the big picture. The driver can access data relevant for off-road driving via the instrument cluster and the central Control Display. In addition to an easily readable compass, it also shows the car's angle of inclination and cross slope, both in degrees and visually in a 3D display.

Adaptive Suspension Packages


Adapt the chassis of your BMW X6 to suit your own personal taste. A total of four different versions are available for selection.

The ultimate in driving comfort with characteristic BMW driving dynamics: The adaptive suspension package ‘Comfort’ allows the suspension and damper settings to be individually adjusted at any time.

The main components of the adaptive suspension package ‘Comfort’ are Dynamic Damper Control and air suspension for the rear axle. The standard setting is designed for excellent driving and damping comfort, and can be individually adjusted using the Driving Experience Control. It changes the damper characteristics via Dynamic Damper Control. The air suspension for the rear axle is included in the equipment package and guaranties a consistently high level of driving comfort, no matter what is being transported.

When more dynamic suspension settings are desired, Sport mode and Sport+ mode are available via the Driving Experience Control. They make the damper settings firmer, which causes the car to steer more responsively, and to have sportier handling characteristics in general.

State-of-the-art driving dynamics: The adaptive suspension package ‘Dynamic’ allows drivers to achieve the full driving dynamics of the vehicle. Encompassing both Dynamic Performance Control and Dynamic Drive, this package is guaranteed to deliver driving dynamics that are intrinsically sporty, while maintaining superior driving comfort, as evidenced by the extremely neutral steering response and minimal body roll in bends.

The Dynamic Performance Control smoothly distributes the drive power on the rear axle between the wheels on the left and on the right. In bends, for example, the torque is increased specifically on the wheels outside of the curve for powerful traction. The result – maximum dynamics and optimal stability. At the same time, Dynamic Drive ensures that rolling motion is reduced to a barely noticeable level, thanks to active stabilisers on the front and rear axles.

In the BMW X6 M50d, the adaptive suspension package ‘Dynamic’ expresses an even sportier note.

The best of both worlds: The adaptive suspension package ‘Professional’ combines the components of both the adaptive suspension packages ‘Comfort’ and ‘Dynamic’, thereby providing the ultimate in driving comfort while maximising driving dynamics. The vehicle's suspension settings can be individually adjusted at any time using the Driving Experience Control.

Numerous innovative technologies are available to support extremely dynamic driving. Dynamic Performance Control, for example, distributes drive power continuously between the left and right wheel on the rear axle. For example, when driving around a bend, the torque applied to the wheel on the outside of the curve (which has better traction) would be increased. The result: maximum dynamics and optimum stability. Meanwhile, Dynamic Drive reduces body roll to a nearly imperceptible minimum with stabilizers on the front and rear axles.

This minimised body roll is particularly desirable when the driver wants more comfort-oriented characteristics, because the less lateral body motion present, the more relaxed the drive. On uneven roads, the damper characteristics can be further adjusted with Dynamic Damper Control for even greater driving comfort. The air suspension for the rear axle is included in the equipment package and guaranties a constant high level of driving comfort, no matter what is being transported.

Increased driving dynamics: adaptive M suspension extracts even more driving dynamics potential from the BMW X6. The Dynamic Damper Control and air cushioning on the rear axle are tuned to deliver exceptionally sporty driving characteristics.

The Sport and Sport+ modes are available in the Driving Experience Control. They provide the vehicle with highly dynamic handling, as well as a tighter shock absorber setting. In addition, the vehicle responds even more directly to steering wheel and accelerator pedal. In the Sport+ mode, the Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) is also activated, which allows for an ambitious, dynamic drive and controlled drifting. In the BMW X6 M50d, all modes feature an even sportier basic configuration.

For a relaxed drive over long stretches, the Comfort mode can be selected.

Intelligent Lightweight construction.

Thanks to lightweight construction, every gram shed from the vehicle's weight increases driving pleasure. The less weight there is to move, the less energy is needed to move it. BMW applied this insight to vehicle construction back in the 1930s and has been continually refining it ever since. Our engineers constantly ask themselves: where does it make sense to reduce weight? And where would it be impractical? The result: intelligent lightweight construction. This encompasses the use of ultra-lightweight materials like magnesium in the dashboard mount or aluminium in the suspension and bonnet. An undercarriage cover made from textile materials has a positive acoustic effect and also reduces weight. This means that the car as a whole is significantly lighter than its predecessors.

BMW X6 Aerodynamics



The entire design of the BMW X6 is testament to the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy. The optimised, aerodynamic front apron and undercarriage feature innovative improvements that reduce air resistance and fuel consumption.
The integrated Air Curtain channels air through two vertical air inlets and along the front wheel arches. The accelerated air flow creates a kind of “curtain” on the outer side of the wheels. At the same time, the Air Breather channels the air flow at the front wheels. These innovative technologies reduce turbulence and air resistance, which in turn reduces fuel consumption.
While driving, the air vent control uses a sensor to continuously monitor whether the engine requires cooling and opens or closes the vents accordingly. The optimised aerodynamics and shortened engine warm-up period reduces fuel consumption.

BMW X6 Eight-speed Steptronic sport transmission



The 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission adapts to suit individual driving styles. It is perfect for everything from comfortable cruising through to a very dynamic drive. In addition to automatic gear selection, it is of course possible to shift gears manually at any time. The gear can be shifted using the dynamically designed selector lever or the shift paddles on the steering wheel.

In Sport mode, the gear shifts are configured for maximum performance. Thanks to the fine increments and eight gears, the engine is always kept at the level at which it can make best use of its power and efficiency. It also makes acceleration faster, when overtaking another vehicle for example.

When travelling at high speeds, the additional eighth gear reduces the required engine speed, thereby also reducing the fuel consumption and engine noise. This is also where the newly developed converter clutch comes into play. The 8-gear Steptronic Sport transmission offers the greatest shifting comfort and the best possible efficiency.

ECO PRO mode.

The ECO PRO Mode helps drivers reduce their fuel consumption by up to 20 percent, depending on their driving style – according to an internal BMW fuel consumption study. The coasting function, the Route-Ahead Assistant and ECO PRO Route make it possible to save a further five percent.

Based on data from the navigation system, the Route-Ahead Assistant recognises curves, built-up areas, speed limits and motorway exits, and gives the driver tips in advance about when to stop accelerating.

ECO PRO Route shows the most efficient route based on the traffic situation, driving style and road conditions. The on-board computer displays the percentage of fuel that can be saved by driving along the route selected by ECO PRO Route.

Intelligent Energy Management.

The intelligent energy management in the BMW X6 is provided by a number of standard-feature BMW EfficientDynamics technologies, including the Auto Start-Stop function, Electric Power Steering and Brake Energy Regeneration. The interplay between these technologies ensures sustainable mobility and maximum efficiency.

The Automatic Start/Stop function ensures that fuel is only used when the car is moving. When the vehicle comes to a temporary stop, for example at traffic lights or in stop-and-go traffic, the Automatic Start/Stop function saves fuel by switching off the engine as soon as the car comes to a complete standstill.

A signal in the Info Display indicates when the Automatic Start/Stop function is active. As soon as the foot is taken from the brake, the engine springs back to life automatically.

The function never compromises driving comfort and safety, as it remains inactive if the engine has not reached its optimal running temperature, the interior has not yet been sufficiently heated or cooled, if the battery level is too low or if the steering wheel is being turned. If necessary, a central control unit restarts the engine even when at a standstill, for example if the car begins to roll or if condensation starts to form on the windscreen. The Automatic Start/Stop function can be switched off at any time at the push of a button.

Every time you turn the steering wheel, energy is consumed. But why should energy be consumed when the wheel is not being turned? BMW Electric Power Steering is only active when it’s needed. Unlike conventional hydraulic steering systems, BMW EPS only uses energy when the wheel is actively being turned. When the steering angle is constant, the electric motor remains inactive.

Every time the brakes are hit, kinetic energy is generated and until recently this energy went unused. Brake Energy Regeneration takes advantage of this long-overlooked potential. It harnesses the coasting energy that is generated whenever the driver brakes or takes his or her foot off the accelerator and turns it into electricity. This electricity is then used to charge the car battery. The intelligent energy management system means that the alternator no longer needs to run constantly, which reduces the strain on the generator. The result: reduced fuel consumption and increased performance – classic BMW EfficientDynamics.
