BMW i3

Few things are as captivating as the dawn of a new era. Where not long ago there was engine noise, now the power is delivered almost silently, so city driving becomes far more relaxed.

One of the finest forms of pleasure is spontaneous pleasure – as spontaneous as the all electric BMW eDrive system. As you move off in the BMW i3, just dipping the accelerator is enough to deploy full torque and pull away powerfully in near silence. The same pedal also lets you brake, because the BMW i3 recovers the available kinetic energy and uses it to charge the battery. This “one-pedal feeling” not only enables you to experience driving like never before, but also extends your driving range.

Rarely has a new era begun as racily as with the BMW i3. BMW eDrive was developed in-house, and with an output of 125 kW (170 PS) and maximum torque of 250 Nm it’s incredibly responsive.

The BMW i3 is also setting new benchmarks in terms of efficiency: electricity consumption of the BMW i3 requires only 12.6 kWh per 100km.

BMW i3 Range Extender

The optional Range Extender can increase the real world range of the BMW i3 from 200km up to a total of 330km. The small, rear-mounted, quiet two-cylinder petrol engine powers a generator that maintains the charge of the battery at a constant level, so that the BMW i3 can continue to drive electrically. It switches on automatically when the battery level is low.
BMW Chassis

Shaping a new and sustainable era of electric mobility meant going back to the drawing board. One of the greatest challenges involved compensating for the weight of the high-voltage battery. The vehicle architecture was therefore divided into two independent units: while the aluminium Drive module at the bottom accommodates the chassis and drive unit components along with the battery, the Life module above it has a great deal of space as a generously proportioned passenger cell. For the first time ever, it has been possible to produce a standard passenger cell from extremely lightweight and robust carbon. Carbon, which has fibres ten times finer than human hair, is even stronger but only half as heavy as steel. This reduces the weight and centre of gravity of the BMW i3 – while safety and agility increase.

The Drive module is constructed from lightweight aluminium and accommodates all the vital drive components. In the rear is the electric motor, the transmission and the optional Range Extender. The high-voltage battery is positioned in the underbody for optimal protection. This ensures maximum safety and gives the vehicle a very low centre of gravity, for a more dynamic drive. Incidentally, there’s an eight-year or 100,000-km warranty on the battery.

The interior of the upper Life module is available as a dedicated living space. Made of high-strength carbon, the passenger cell provides a generously proportioned loft-like atmosphere and a high level of safety. At the same time the DIN weight of the BMW i3 drops to 1,245 kg, lending it a unique degree of agility and positively affecting the range.

BMW i3 Driving Assistant Plus package

A variety of innovative driver assistance systems in the BMW i3 not only makes driving a pleasure but also ensures worry-free parking. With the Driving Assistant Plus package, the BMW i3 will warn you about collisions and is able to automatically maintain speed and distance in stop-start conditions.

Driving Assistant Plus makes driving in the BMW i3 especially safe and comfortable. The Active Cruise Control with Stop and Go function maintains a constant distance to the vehicle in front and regulates the speed, even until the BMW i3 has come to a standstill.

The approach control warning with light city braking function detects potential risks of collisions with vehicles, while the person warning with light city braking function reacts to the possibility of collisions with pedestrians, providing that there is sufficient daylight. Speed Limit Info shows the respective permitted maximum speed in the instrument combination.

The Parking Assistant package offers all-round assistance for especially easy and worry free parking: with Park Distance Control, rear-view camera and the Parking Assistant.

BMW i3 Benefits

The benefits.

CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced plastic) is a highly resilient composite made of carbon fibres and a matrix of plastic. It is approximately 30% lighter than aluminium and 50% lighter than steel.

BMW i3 Production

The production. Step 1.

In collaboration with SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers, the BMW Group produces the carbon fibres itself. After more than ten years of research and development work, it is now possible to deploy the material in large-scale automobile construction for the first time.

BMW i3 Production STEP 2

The production. Step 2.

The spun fibres are woven into mats and soaked in special resins.

BMW i3 Production Step 3

The production. Step 3.

They are then baked to form rigid elements – the body components.

BMW i3 Production Step 4

The production. Step 4.

In the next step, a specially developed, fully automated adhesive procedure cements the body components together.

BMW i3 Result

The result.

Using carbon results in higher stability of the body and greater safety for the vehicle occupants. Maximum stiffness permits faster acceleration as well as improved agility and roadholding, the lower weight reduces fuel consumption.

Terms and Conditions

[1] Fuel consumption, CO2 emissions data, electrical consumption and range is based upon Combined Driving Test Cycle in accordance with ADR 81/02. Actual figures will depend on many factors including traffic conditions, driving habits, prevailing conditions and your vehicle’s equipment, condition and use.  These figures are unlikely to be achieved in real world driving conditions and should only be used for comparing one vehicle with another.  BMW recommends the use of minimum RON 95 super unleaded petrol. Unleaded 91 RON and higher with a maximum ethanol content of 10% (E10) may also be used. Output and fuel consumption figures apply to RON98 fuel. All engines meet the EU5 emissions standard.
