The BMW 5 Series Saloon

Driving dynamics & efficiency of the BMW 5 Series sedan.

Where driving dynamics are concerned, the BMW 5 Series shifts the boundaries. The range of powerful engines impressively transmit its sporty exterior to the road. In addition to power, the BMW 5 Series offers intelligence. The incorporation of progressive technologies enable it to exploit its dynamics to the full, making it a true hero.

Opposing steering.

Integral Active Steering combines steering for the rear wheels with support that varies based on the steering angle on the front axle. At speeds of up to around 60 km/h, the rear wheels turn opposite the front wheels. This minimises the effort required for steering, resulting in comfortable responsiveness while manoeuvring, and it reduces the turning radius and improves the agility of the vehicle.

Parallel steering

Parallel steering.

Beginning around faster speeds of around 37mph, the rear wheels turn parallel to the front wheels. This increases stability and comfort particularly with swift and sudden lane changes.

Drive Performance Control

Drive Performance Control with Adaptive Mode.

The Driving Experience Control offers the driver the choice between the standard COMFORT Mode, ECO PRO Mode, geared towards efficiency, and SPORT Mode, which enables even more dynamic driving. The new interactive function ADAPTIVE Mode continuously adjusts the Dynamic Damper Control*, the steering and the Steptronic transmission to suit the current driving situation.

The BMW 5 Series is not satisfied with mediocrity. It is therefore only logical that it should be the absolute champion in its class in terms of acceleration and CO2 emissions. The Intelligent Auto Start Stop function, included for the first time, only switches the engine off when the stop is expected to last.

Thanks to more lightweight materials such as aluminium and ultra modern aluminium alloys, the seventh generation BMW 5 Series  weighs in at up to 95 kilograms less than its predecessor. The intelligent lightweight construction also ensures a balanced weight distribution between front and rear axle as well as a lower centre of gravity. The result is highly dynamic driving characteristics.

In the BMW 5 Series, the BMW EfficientDynamics package of technologies is visible on a distinctive design icon: the kidney grille. When demand for cooling air is low, an air valve inside the Active Air Stream kidney grille remains closed, leading to ideal cd values as low as 0.24, one of the lowest in its class.

Less fuel consumption, more driving pleasure: BMW EfficientDynamics is the name of the strategy to minimise fuel consumption and CO2 emissions while at the same time increasing dynamics and driving pleasure. The package of functions covers the drive system, energy management and vehicle concept.
