Efficiency of the BMW 4 Series.

The BMW 4 Series is built to minimise fuel consumption and emissions while still maximising driving pleasure. Better for you, better for the environment.

Each individual element on the 4 Series’ exterior is designed to enhance aerodynamics. Features such as the integrated Aero Curtain help to reduce turbulence, air resistance and hold the car closer to the road. The flat undercarriage cover, which also shields the engine compartment, further  improves the car’s aerodynamics, and improves sound insulation.

ECO PRO mode.

Everything in ECO PRO mode is geared towards greater efficiency, reducing fuel consumption by up to 20%.

This mode optimises accelerator and transmission response as well as shift points, and intelligently adapts the heating/air conditioning strategy. You’ll also receive ECO PRO tips that relate to your current driving situation for even greater driving efficiency.

BMW TwinPower Turbo engines.

BMW’s TwinPower Turbo technology significantly reduces the fuel consumption of both petrol and diesel engines while simultaneously boosting power.  The petrol engine combines a TwinScroll turbocharger with Valvetronic, Double-VANOS and High-precision direct injection.

The diesel engine features common-rail direct injection and a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. Technology designed to thrill, economically.

Auto Start-Stop.

Auto Start-Stop conserves fuel when your car is moving. While waiting at traffic lights or in stop-and-go traffic, Auto Start-Stop saves fuel by switching off the engine as soon as the car comes to a stop and you’re in neutral.

Auto Start-Stop never compromises driving comfort and safety. It only works once the engine has reached its ideal running temperature, if the the cabin is at the temperature that’s required, if the battery is sufficiently charged and if the steering wheel is pointing ahead.

BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé Brake Energy Regeneration

Brake Energy Regeneration.

The 4 Series’ Brake Energy Regeneration technology harnesses the kinetic energy produced by slowing or braking and turns it into electricity. Used to charge the car’s battery, the intelligent energy management system means that the alternator no longer needs to run permanently, so reducing strain on the generator and in turn, reduced fuel consumption and increased performance – typical of BMW’s EfficientDynamics.

BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé Optimum Shift Indicator

Optimum Shift Indicator.

Optimum, perfectly-timed gear changes can help save fuel, particularly in urban traffic and over long distances.

The engine’s electronics system identifies the most efficient gear, based on road conditions and engine speed, indicating when it’s best to change up or down.

The system also recognises when you are accelerating fast, so will delay its recommendation until the engine speed is back up. Comparative tests have shown that vehicles with the Optimum Shift Indicator use around 4% less fuel.

Electric Power Steering.

N.B. BMW435i Sport model shown not available in the UK.

The BMW 4 Series’ electrical steering creates an incredible drive, enabling you to easily manoeuvre the car around the tightest corners and over the toughest terrain.

It’s less sensitive to bumps, while active anti-roll damping reliably evens out oscillating movements. You can make the steering characteristics tighter at any time by selecting Sport mode.

Unlike conventional power steering, it doesn't use a hydraulic system, having instead an electric motor. The benefit being that the motor only operates when steering support is actually required, making it more efficient.

Servotronic steering comes as standard in all models, permanently adjusting the steering power in relation to the car's speed. The motor of the electrical steering support is supplied with power accordingly. So when steering at low speeds, for example through narrow, winding alleys, only minimal force on the steering wheel is required. As speed increases, however, the steering support required is reduced continuously, ensuring more direct contact with the road.
