The BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo sets standards in dynamics and ride comfort. Interacting with the strength of BMW TwinPower Turbo engines, the eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission enables optimum power build-up at all speeds. Additionally, the Adaptive M Sport suspension introduces an even greater experience of driving dynamics.

Thanks to BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, the latest generation of BMW petrol and diesel engines from the BMW EfficientDynamics engine range can deliver excellent responsiveness, even at low engine speeds, all while being exceptionally fuel efficient and low in emissions.

The petrol engines feature innovative turbocharger technology, Valvetronic fully variable valve control including Double-VANOS, and High-Precision Injection. A series of highly sophisticated elements that together provide tremendous power delivery and high efficiency. Turbochargers with variable turbine geometry and the newest generation of common rail direct injection combine in the diesel engines, further contributing to reduced fuel consumption and emissions.

The 8-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission adapts to suit individual driving styles. It’s perfect for comfortable cruising through to very dynamic driving. In addition to automatic gear selection, it’s also possible to change gears manually at any time using the selector lever or the shift paddles on the steering wheel.

In Sport mode, the gear changes are configured for maximum performance. Thanks to the fine increments and eight gears, the engine is always kept at the level at which it can make best use of its power and efficiency. It also makes acceleration faster, such as when overtaking another vehicle.

When travelling at high speeds, the additional eighth gear reduces the required engine speed, so reducing fuel consumption and engine noise. This is also where the newly developed converter clutch comes into play. The eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission offers the greatest shifting comfort and the best possible efficiency.

The Adaptive M Sport suspension is set ten millimetres lower than the standard suspension to further increase the vehicle's dynamic potential. The driver can adjust the driving characteristics via the Driving Performance Control, enabling whichever driving style is the most appealing – from comfortable to extremely athletic. On all settings the Adaptive M Sport suspension's electrically controlled dampers calibrate to suit the road conditions within fractions of a second. The system also uses numerous sensors that measure wheel vibrations, as well as vehicle speed, for optimal damping and vehicle safety.

The COMFORT mode ensures exceptionally comfortable driving by making uneven road surfaces almost completely imperceptible. The SPORT mode offers a fantastically sporty suspension with noticeably tighter damper settings. Outstanding driving dynamics with a more spontaneous response from the steering and drive train are all a feature of the SPORT+ mode. This also activates the DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) function that allows more slip on the drive wheels in difficult driving conditions for a phenomenally sporty drive.

This doesn't completely disable the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) function; instead it intervenes much later to ensure the vehicle ultimately - and within the limits of physical possibility - remains stable.


The active rear spoiler automatically extends at speeds over 110 km/h and retracts once the speed returns to 70 km/h in order to improve stability. It can also be manually activated using a button on the driver's door.

Intelligent energy management.

Standard BMW EfficientDynamics technologies – Automatic Start/Stop function, ECO PRO mode, Brake Energy Regeneration and electro-mechanical power steering – form an intelligent energy management system that reduces fuel consumption, contributing to sustainable mobility. A high level of driving dynamics and driving pleasure are preserved without compromise.

The Driving Performance Control offers the driver the choice between COMFORT mode with its standard engine and transmission settings, ECO PRO mode, which is geared towards greater efficiency, and SPORT mode, which enables even more dynamic driving.

ECO PRO mode adjusts the characteristics of the accelerator and transmission as well as the heating/air conditioning settings to make the drive as fuel-efficient as possible, offering fuel savings of up to 20 percent*. Further fuel savings can be achieved using the "cruising" mode, the route ahead assistant and ECO PRO route. The route ahead assistant uses the navigation system to assess local road conditions and give tips in advance. If there is a speed limit change around the next bend, the system advises the driver to slow down before the bend.

ECO PRO route further helps to ensure the efficient use of fuel, suggesting an efficiency optimised route that takes into account the volume of traffic, individual driving style and local conditions.

 In SPORT mode, the car responds more directly, leading to a more dynamic driving experience.

The Automatic Start/Stop function ensures that fuel is only used when the car is moving. When the vehicle comes to a temporary stop, for example at traffic lights or in stop-and-go traffic, the Automatic Start/Stop function saves fuel by switching off the engine as soon as the car comes to a complete standstill. 

Until recently, braking meant giving away energy. Brake Energy Regeneration, part of a suite of technologies from BMW EfficientDynamics, uses energy gained during braking to charge the battery.

As soon as you release the accelerator or apply the brake, Brake Energy Regeneration uses the energy liberated to charge the battery, so reducing the strain on the alternator. With the alternator running less, more of the power of the engine can go to the wheels more often, increasing driving pleasure.

Electric power steering adjusts the steering support depending on the car’s speed. This results in precise steering behaviour at high speeds and effortless manoeuvrability when parking. The steering only consumes energy when it’s necessary, saving on fuel and reducing emissions.

Instead of a hydraulic pump, it uses an electric motor. In conventional systems, the pump needs to be constantly powered by the engine, but this electric support only runs when the steering wheel is being moved. When driving straight ahead or maintaining the same steering angle (e.g. on long bends), the electric motor isn’t active and doesn’t consume any energy. By adjusting the steering support to match the driving situation and speed, steering is made easier.
