BMW 2 Series Dynamics & Efficiency.

High performance, low consumption – those are the goals behind the engines in the BMW 2 Series. Sophisticated TwinPower Turbo petrol and diesel engines from the BMW EfficientDynamics engine family have won the “Engine of the Year Award” several times, impressing with their low emissions, smooth running, outstanding dynamics and, thanks to the eight-speed Steptronic transmission, breathtaking, virtually interruption-free acceleration.

The latest generation BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engines feature agile power delivery and excellent responsiveness, even at low engine speeds, yet are far more efficient, with fewer emissions and better performance than their predecessors.

With the latest fuel injection technology, fully variable valve control and state-of-the-art turbocharger engineering, these engines provide a particularly efficient drive train, emphasising the renowned BMW engine prowess. The BMW TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder petrol engine that powers the BMW M235i has been ‘Engine of the Year’ many times, thanks to its dynamic power delivery, extremely smooth running and overall efficiency.

The new generation of BMW TwinPower Turbo diesel engines are notable for their excellent responsiveness and agile power delivery at all engine speeds, as well as for their low fuel consumption. Producing fewer emissions and friction in order to guarantee maximum driving pleasure, they feature lightweight aluminium construction and one, two or three turbochargers with variable turbine geometry. They also come with the very latest CommonRail direct injection, which guarantees optimum combustion to further reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

ECO PRO mode.

Everything in ECO PRO mode is geared towards greater efficiency, reducing fuel consumption by up to 20%.

ECO PRO mode optimises accelerator and transmission response as well as gear shift points, and also intelligently adapts the air conditioning. It also prompts ECO PRO tips on the display that relate to your current driving situation,  helping you achieve greater driving efficiency.

BMW’s aerodynamic philosophy is built on our racing heritage, but with a focus on the future. It’s constantly being honed and updated, using the latest innovations to build on a thoroughbred foundation.

The BMW 2 Series epitomises this, with each air inlet and contour designed to streamline the car. Features such as the integrated Aero Curtain and flat undercarriage, which shields the engine compartment and rear axle, enable the car to move through the air more efficiently and make every model an incredible drive.

Auto Start-Stop ensures that you’re only using fuel when you’re actually driving. While waiting at traffic lights or in stop-start traffic, Auto Start-Stop saves fuel by switching off the engine as soon as the car comes to a stop and you’re in neutral. A simple click of a button switches this feature on and off.

The BMW 2 Series’ Brake Energy Regeneration technology harnesses the kinetic energy produced by slowing or braking and turns it into electricity. This is then used to charge the car’s battery; intelligent energy management means that the alternator no longer needs to run permanently. The result - less strain on the generator, reduced fuel consumption and increased performance – typical of BMW’s EfficientDynamics.

Fine spacing between all eight gears allows the BMW 2 Series to reduce fuel consumption and enables optimum power delivery. The resulting smoothness  makes the BMW 2 Series feel effortless and sporty on every surface.  

Optimum, perfectly-timed gear changes can help save fuel, particularly in urban traffic and over long distances. The engine’s electronics system identifies the most efficient gear, based on road conditions and engine speed, indicating when it’s best to change gear.

The system also recognises when you are accelerating fast and will delay its recommendation accordingly until the engine speed is perfect. Comparative tests have shown that vehicles with the Optimum Shift Indicator use around 4% less fuel.

This is the ideal suspension for outstanding agility – electronically controlled dampers in the Adaptive M suspension adapt to suit your driving style and road conditions. You can modify the damper characteristics, and the Adaptive M suspension can be lowered by 10 mm, further increasing the vehicle's agility.

A noticeably firmer damper setting is activated when the Sport mode is selected via the Drive Performance Control. In Sport+ mode, the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) is replaced by the Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) - for the ultimate in agility and responsiveness.

Variable sport steering with Servotronic allows for direct and agile driving with minimal steering effort. It varies the steering ratio independently of speed, so reducing the steering required to achieve a given steering angle. This greatly improves agility, especially around tight bends or when swerving to avoid a hazard. It makes parking and low-speed manoeuvring much easier.
